In response to cases where criminals, similar to Lucy Letby, evade their sentencing responsibilities, the Prime Minister has revealed the enforcement of compulsory attendance for sentencing, using newly granted powers.
Under upcoming legislation set to be introduced in October, prison officers will be authorized to utilize ‘reasonable force’ to escort defendants into the courtroom, ensuring their presence in the dock.
This initiative follows the refusal of serial child murderer Lucy Letby to participate in her sentencing, thereby avoiding confronting grieving families. Furthermore, judges will have the authority to extend sentences by an additional two years for those who fail to appear. Read more here
